I consider myself a seasoned mom these days. Our youngest is eight, so when I meet expecting mothers and they ask questions about teaching their children to read and count I always just smile and tell them not to stress about that.
Should I Read To My Unborn Baby
I must say, this is one of the biggest questions new moms ask me. And the answer is, YES! There are many studies out there that show the development benefits of reading to babies in the womb (I will touch on this in a later post). But, let me tell you my experience of reading to all three of my children in the womb.
As I sat on the couch or in the rocker, I read the same book each night to my baby in the womb. I started this early on during the pregnancy. It seemed as though they each calmed down as I started reading their story each night. It’s like they enjoyed hearing the story and it soothed them.
After they had been born, I continued reading the same book. As a matter of fact, I took the book to the hospital and read the story to them once everyone was all cleaned up. Oh, what joy. The little body relaxed and sunk right in. Or maybe it was all my imagination, but either way, each of my little bundles of joy knew my voice.
What Are The Best Books To Read To Babies
My all time favorite books to read to babies are board books. I like board books because they are sturdy and grow with the child into toddler years. I also like the board books that have little mirrors. Why? So as the baby grows, they can explore and see themselves.
As I mentioned above, my youngest is now eight, but I still look at baby books from time to time. And especially when I meet expecting mothers. Hey, books are always a great gift. Baby, Baby! by Diane Stortz is a cute little board book. I had the pleasure of participating in a review and must say this little book would be one I would add to my board book library.
My Personal Review of Baby, Baby!
As I mentioned above, I love little books with mirrors for growing children to look at themselves. The pages are simple and vibrant. This little book shares the story about a baby’s daily activities. This is a great addition to any home’s library. The end of the book has a larger mirror with the words, “Who does God love?” As you finish this book, you can peek into the mirror with your child and let them know that God loves them.
